WHAT ARE ALIGNERS?

Aligners are clear, removable plastic trays that gradually move teeth into alignment. They are a more discreet alternative to traditional braces.

How Aligners Work:

Aligners are custom-made using 3D imaging technology to fit snugly over the teeth. They are designed to be worn for 20-22 hours per day, only being removed for eating, drinking, and cleaning. A series of aligners are worn in succession, with each aligner gradually shifting the teeth until the desired position is achieved. Aligners are usually replaced every 1-2 weeks as the teeth move.

Pros of Aligners:

  • Invisible: They are clear, so they are much less noticeable than traditional braces.

  • Removable: You can take them out when eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing, making oral hygiene easier and more effective.

  • Comfortable: Aligners generally cause less discomfort than braces since there are no wires or brackets to irritate the mouth.

  • Fewer Office Visits: You may need fewer visits to the orthodontist for adjustments, although checkups are still necessary to monitor progress.

  • More Freedom: No food restrictions since you can remove the aligners when eating.

Which One is Right for You?

  • Braces are generally better for more complex cases, such as significant crowding, bite problems, or cases requiring precise control of tooth movement.

  • Aligners are ideal for patients seeking a discreet treatment option and those with mild to moderate alignment issues.

 Treatment Duration

  • Braces: Typically 18-24 months, though this can vary based on the complexity of the case.

  • Aligners: Typically 12-18 months, though again this depends on individual needs.

Ultimately, the choice between braces and aligners depends on your personal preference, lifestyle, the complexity of your case, and your orthodontist’s recommendations. Both options are effective, but your orthodontist can help you choose the best option based on your specific needs.
